The first dedicated birdwatching tour in the country was organized in the mid-1990s’ by Taulant Bino, on behalf of the activities of the Albanian Society for the Protection of Birds and Mammals. The tour lasted circa one week while the tourists came from Great Britain. They were mostly members of the British Trust for Ornithology, an NGO based in Great Britain. Despite this first tour, there was a period of pause in birdwatching tours as the country’s tourism reputation suffered from the political events of 1997-2000
The International Waterbird Census (IWC) is an international program that is organized since 1967. In Albania, IWC started in 1993 and it has been since undertaken almost every year..
Efforts to reestablish Albania as a potential birdwatching destination started in 2014. Now a limited number of companies, such as AviFauna Naturresor (Sweden), Naturetrek (UK), Bund Reisen (Germany), PR Birding Tours (Sweden) sell already birdwatching packages in Albania while other tour operators from the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, France etc. have shown interest in developing and selling birdwatching tours in Albania
A new colony of herons and cormorants was found in Divjake-Karavasta National Park by AOS. It is indeed a great finding since it is the only heronry in Albania as others further north (Drin delta and Velipoja) disappeared almost 20 years ago. The colony has almost 400-600 nests. The bulk of them belong to the Pygmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmeus). Other breeding species were Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and probably Great White Egret (Egretta alba), Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) and Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo).
