Actions Towards Reduction of Wild Birds Poisoning in Albania

This project firstly aims to implement important activities for evaluating the level and the impact of poisoning in the population of birds of prey in certain hotspots (for birds of prey in the country) and carry out awareness raising and capacity building actions towards the achievement of sustainable hunting aim, in the post-hunting ban period.

The chosen areas for the survey are situated in southern part of the country in areas where traditionally the main local livelihood activity has been livestock. Despite the socio-economic changes occurred in Albania along the last 25 years, these areas still preserve their traditional livelihoods character, almost completely relying in livestock breeding (mainly sheep and goats).

Project objectives:

Create a clear picture on the context and impact of deliberate poisoning in important sites for birds of prey in Albania

Raise awareness on the impact of poisoning (poison baits and lead shot) in wildlife and humans

Capacity building of relevant stakeholders in combating wildlife crime

Capacity building of relevant stakeholders on sustainable hunting as a post hunting ban measure in Albania

The project is supported by Euronatur, funded by MAVA and implemented by AOS-Albanian Ornithological Society.
